Diego Cibelli’s project Metamorfosi is on view at Art Basel Miami Beach at Alfonso Artiaco (booth D28) for the Kabinett sector. In this work, the artist focuses on porcelain and the ancient techniques used in making it. This material is precious and robust and is also linked to Real Fabbrica di Capodimonte, one of the oldest manufacturers of porcelain in Europe, founded in the mid-eighteenth century by the king of Naples. Cibelli has developed a series of works with visual influences absorbed during his travels that range from the sculptures of ancient Greece to the paintings of imperial era of Japan. In Metamorfosi, the human body is transformed into a hybrid figure suspended in a transitory existence; it appears to become one with the natural environment. The new creatures are softened with floral motifs and elements of the sea, calling to mind the myths of the Roman poet Ovid. There are two metamorphoses occurring here: both of the porcelain, which changes from raw material to final shape after firing, and of the subjects depicted in their precarious.
